Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology & Director of Diagnostic Testing Stewardship - The University of Florida
This is a unique dual role, divided equally between serving as the Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology and the Director of Diagnostic Testing Stewardship.
The successful candidate will co-lead the clinical microbiology laboratory while directing an established, data-driven diagnostic stewardship program. This program is fully supported by institutional leadership and operates through a multidisciplinary oversight committee to ensure governance, prioritization, and accountability for test utilization across the health system.
Key Responsibilities
• Clinical Microbiology Leadership: Share medical and technical oversight of the microbiology lab, ensuring continuous compliance with CAP, CLIA, and state regulations. Provide expert consultation to healthcare providers regarding test selection, result interpretation, and antimicrobial stewardship. Lead the validation and implementation of new diagnostic methodologies, particularly advancing molecular infectious disease testing.
• Diagnostic Stewardship: Provide strategic leadership for diagnostic stewardship, policy development, and enterprise-wide utilization standards. Design and promote evidence-based, algorithm-driven testing pathways to reduce low-value or redundant testing. Oversee the review process for complex, high-cost send-outs and partner with clinical IT to implement EMR-based decision support tools. Use advanced analytics to monitor utilization patterns, driving cost stewardship and quality metrics.
• Academic & Educational Excellence: Actively contribute to the department's educational and research missions. Deliver didactic lectures and bench-side teaching, mentor pathology residents, infectious disease fellows, and medical students, and engage in collaborative clinical and translational research.
