The Department of Pathology of the MetroHealth System (MHS), a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, seeks a Clinical Pathologist with laboratory leadership experience to serve as Director of the Clinical Laboratory. The candidate will be proposed for an academic appointment at CWRU School of Medicine.

The MHS is a fully integrated provider of high quality health care, consisting of the 731-bed MetroHealth Medical Center and 13 inpatient and outpatient facilities throughout Cuyahoga County. The Clinical Laboratories perform over 2.5 million tests annually. Testing sites include: a Blood Bank/Transfusion Service, which supports the MHS Level One Trauma Center; a Core laboratory, providing services in chemistry, toxicology, hematology, coagulation, and immunochemistry among others; a microbiology laboratory that supports several public health initiatives as well as inpatient and outpatient services; Immunology; several rapid response and satellite laboratory locations throughout the county, and a robust Point of Care testing division. The clinical laboratories are managed by six professional staff, including MD's and PhD's, supported by administrators, supervisors and approximately 150 technical and clerical staff.

The successful applicant will lead the tradition of academic and clinical excellence in the clinical laboratories. He or she will collaborate with the CLIA Director (Chairperson) and the professional and administrative staff in pathology to direct and coordinate test development, ensure the laboratory's continuing regulatory compliance and accreditation, actively participate in institutional initiatives involving clinical laboratory services, implement testing in support of oncologic and systemic molecular biology, plan and implement programs that improve operational efficiency of laboratory workflows and processes, provide leadership and strategic planning in the design and implementation of a new pathology laboratory for the health system, and serve as a liaison with clinicians for clinical pathology matters for the department of pathology. The candidate will also be involved in teaching students and postgraduate (resident) physicians. The successful candidate will have a record of interdisciplinary collaborations. He or she will have strong laboratory management skills, the ability to work collaboratively with clinical teams, excellent strategic planning skills, strong evidence of scholarly achievements and experience in teaching and training of students, residents and fellows. The ability to provide coverage in all areas of CP, including the Blood Bank, Microbiology and Chemistry, is a requirement.

Qualified applicants should hold an MD or DO, and be board certified in CP or AP/CP by the American Board of Pathology. Fellowship experience, especially in Clinical Chemistry, will be given priority. The candidate must have at least five years of leadership experience in clinical pathology. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively on teams are required. Opportunities for academic advancement in the CWRU clinical sciences tract will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and achievements.
