Chemistry Director - Nuvance Health

Summary:
Provides administrative, clinical and technical direction on a full-time basis for clinical chemistry, immunology, toxicology and point-of-care-testing services provided by the laboratory to ensure high quality, timely, clinically appropriate and cost effective services that meet all regulatory and accreditation requirements. Provides consultative services to medical staff and is readily available to laboratory staff and clients for personal, phone or elctronic communication. Participates in teaching and research activities.

Responsibilities:
1. Serves as Medical Director for Clinical Chemistry, Immunology and Toxicology. Establishes and maintains standards for test procedures & laboratory operations. Directs, monitors & evaluates quality control/assurance and performance improvement procedures to ensure high-quality test results & laboratory services. Recommends & implements changes.

2. Assesses, evaluates, selects & implements new tests, methods & technology to maintain state-of-the-art services. Serves as technical consultant to entire laboratory for method evaluation and validation, statistical analysis, technology assessment, equipment selection, instrumentation, automation.

3. Reviews all method validation data related to introduction of new test methods, kits, instruments & technologies for all laboratory sections.

4. Provides professional consultation services to medical staff or laboratory test selection & utilization, analysis & interpretation of test results. Prepares formal interpretive reports for laboratory tests as required.

5. Monitors and maintains compliance with accreditation standards (CAP, TJC) & federal & state government regulations (CLIA, CT and NY State).

6. Teaches & trains pathology residents, medical students & laboratory technologists. Participates in other residency programs, as necessary.

7. Initiates, plans, directs and conducts research activities & involves residents & technologists.

8. Directs planning for chemistry laboratory. Assists Technical Specialist and Laboratory Manager in preparation of operational & capital budgets, monthly, quarterly & annual reports. Maintains knowledge of operational expenses & cost analysis. Initiates cost containment measures.

9. Serves as Medical Director for Point-of-Care Testing and chairs hospital Point-of-Care Testing Advisory Committee. Advises and supports Point-of-Care Testing Coordinator and serves as primary technical & clinical resource for POCT issues.

10. Serves as laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Officer. Monitors chemical inventory, chemical disposal and recommends improvements in chemical safety measures. Serves on other intra- & inter-departmental committees as directed by Chairman.

11. Maintains and increases professional competencies through continuing education & participation in professional activities (research collaboration, professional associations, etc.).

12. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required: Ph.D. or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry or natural science from accredited university and minimum of 7 yrs (to be combined with what is stated in above section) clinical or job-related experience. (2 yrs may be successful completion of COMACC accredited clinical chemistry postdoctoral training program).

Minimum Experience: seven years or more

Desired: Membership in professional organizations (AACC, NACB, etc.).
